TubaChristmas was established in 1974 in memory of one of the world's foremost tuba players, William J. "Bill" Bell, retired professor at Indiana University and former member of the NBC Symphony under Toscanini, the Sousa Band, and the Goldman Band. The same Alec Wilder arrangements of Christmas music for tubas and baritones are played by groups around the world, some as small as 4 or 5 and others ranging into the hundreds in places such as Rockefeller Center in NYC. Even though TubaChristmas was developed by Harvey Phillips as a memorial to William J. Bell, tubists now remember Harvey Phillips at these performances, too, since he died in October 2010.
The Jackson Hole Community Band has sponsored and presented TubaChristmas since 1992, and players from ID, NV, and other locations throughout western WY have joined our local band members in these concerts.
